Gillet Cousteau
Printer in Paris, 1492-1523

Libraire-imprimeur

Cousteau appears to be one of a number of printers employed to produce books for Antoine Verard, using both his own material and material supplied by Verard (especially woodcuts and initials). Claudin names him as one of Verard’s printers from 1492 (Claudin, ii, 189, and 426, 448, 451, 466). After Verard’s death, from about 1512 he produces very similar texts working for an number of booksellers, particularly for Guillaume Eustace until 1515, and for Antoine II Verard in 1518 and 1519. From about 1507 books are more frequently dated, often using the form ‘iiiie’ for the day of the month. His output is almost entirely in French.

Address
‘rue Garnier Sainct Ladre pres la faulse porte Sainct Martin’.
From 1509 to 1520 ‘rue des petits champs pres la chappelle Sainct Julian ou au Palays’.
