Guillaume Le Rouge
1493-1517

Imprimeur, succeeded his father Pierre Le Rouge from 1493

Worked in Chablis (1489), in Troyes (1491-1492), and then in Paris. Noted for the introduction of the first italic type in Paris. The Inventaire chronologique records no books with his name for 1515 and 1516. Called ‘Rubeus’ in Latin. Le Rouge seems to have worked particularly for the bookseller Denys Roce. Petrus de Ponte worked for Le Rouge as a corrector as well as an author.

Le Rouge is the earliest Parisian printer to use an italic type, though one with a rather unusual uppercase.
